The Benefits of Home Alarm Systems: How They Can Keep You and Your Family Safe

It’s only natural that we all want to protect our loved ones, our homes and our possessions – it’s a concern that every homeowner and tenant shares. All of us want to be sure we have the right home alarm systems in place to avoid letting burglars think they can have their way with our homes and our valuables. Likewise, we need to know that our homes are equipped to deal with any possible incidents that may arise with electrical, plumbing or heating systems. While there are no one-step fixes to guarantee our homes are fully secured, there are steps in the right direction.

In this home alarm system guide, we at Smartzone want to introduce you to the range of devices you can access through our products and services, so that you can make a more informed choice about your home’s security. We’ll touch on the various fire alarms, carbon monoxide alarms and water leak alarms currently available, and how they simplify the entire process of making your home safe. Following that, we’ll walk you through how burglar alarms and related surveillance equipment can be installed in your home – and maintained – with zero fuss.

Our aim is to show you that keeping your home safe and secure can be made simple, and that Smartzone is the most qualified service provider.

Security is a right that every community has always looked to protect. In the modern age, homeowners and tenants still seek to enjoy this same right, except through slightly more sophisticated means. Video monitors, keypads, motion sensors and contact sensors have each been a standard of modern home alarm systems for many years. The difference in today’s connected age is that they can be integrated into a system that is easy to use for you at home, all controlled from your smartphone screen. The benefits of security remain the same – comfort and peace-of-mind for you and your family – and with today’s range of affordable user-friendly systems, the costs have actually never been lower.

Dividing Home Security Risks into Categories

A handy approach to thinking about security is to divide the risks into those that are environmental, such as a fire or leak caused by faults in a heating or plumbing system, and those that are social, such as burglary or vandalism. Our Smart Home security system has home alarms to cover all these bases. And with our Smart Home App, you get to keep an eye on everything in one place, instead of getting tangled up in multiple different gadgets and the headache that can bring.

Smoke, Fire, and Carbon Monoxide Alarms

Image of a fire alarm ringing.

Smartzone takes a dual approach to minimising the risk of fires starting or spreading, with our Smoke Detector and Smart Heat Detector. With its built-in siren, our Smoke Detector does the job of a traditional smoke detector, but also as part of our Smart Home ecosystem, it alerts you directly to your phone if it detects anything out of sorts. Our Smart Heat Detector’s job is to spot any dramatic increase in temperatures in the home — either at a rate of above 8.3°C per minute, or if overall temperatures exceed 57°C. Again, it will alert you to any hazard with its built-in alarm and with a message straight to your Smart Home App.

Smoke and fire are one thing, but what about the less discernible kinds of threats we need to be mindful of? Carbon monoxide (CO) is a poisonous gas that is colourless, odourless, and tasteless. Our Carbon Monoxide Detector is an essential component of the Smart Home Security System, providing 24/7 protection capable of detecting even very minimal levels of CO in your home. It is battery operated and completely wireless, which means hassle-free installation for you.

Water Leak Sensors to Prevent Water Damage

Another essential consideration is the risk of water leaks. Again, Smartzone can offer an easy solution that acts fast to trigger an alarm in case of any sign of such a situation. Our WLS-16 is designed to alert you before any kind of disaster happens – not after the fact – and to reduce the risk of water damage. Whether in the kitchen or elsewhere, it’s an ideal, user-friendly means of keeping your home dry and your mind at ease.

Home Security and Burglary Prevention

Environmental risks like these aside, the other big risk that you want to keep at bay is that of your home being burgled or vandalised. With our series of house alarms, motion detectors, door and window sensors, and smart CCTV, you’re guaranteed to minimise the chances of any such incidents on your property.

The days are gone when these were the preserve of big corporate or government buildings — or something you only saw in action movies. But that’s not even news. While many homes have been equipped with such tools for a long time now, the real development today is that all of these measures can be put in place in a way that is individually suited to your home, easy to use, and affordable.

Motion Detectors and Door and Window Sensors

Motion sensors are key to any well-functioning intruder alarm system. Our compact and low-profile devices will let you know immediately when any kind of unexpected movement occurs in your home. If these devices detect an intruder, they can be configured to trigger a home alarm, alert you via your mobile device, and even to contact the authorities. These motion detectors are compact and equipped with a selection of sensitivity levels. When coupled with our door sensors and window sensors, you can rest assured that your home is not a welcome place for any unwanted visitors.

Home CCTV Camera Systems

So, what might be left to think about on this front? If you feel you’d prefer another layer of security, then we recommend you consider our Smart CCTV packages. We offer a range of internal and external security cameras that are also microphone-equipped. They are guaranteed to watch over your area of choice 24/7 and can be set up to send a video stream or video alerts straight to your phone.

Monitored Vs Unmonitored Systems

Now, let’s say you’ve decided on what areas of your home you feel you need to keep an eye on — what else is there to consider? The final fundamental to think about is whether you want to go with a monitored or an unmonitored system. Now, of course, installing any Smartzone system means that your house is being monitored by multiple devices and that if something comes up, these are going to alert anyone in the home, in the vicinity and also you directly on your phone. Nonetheless, these features combined still make up what gets called an ‘unmonitored system’ in security speak. Why? Because of course, it can always help to avail of an extra backup team that gets alerted in the case of any alarms going off. With a ‘monitored system’, you get all of the above, plus the extra assurance that our response team will be notified too. In such a case, Smartzone’s team will alert all of your listed contacts. Or in the case of an emergency, such as a possible break-in, the Gardaí will be contacted promptly.

Installation and Maintenance

So, if you feel that a Smartzone system sounds like a more efficient security option, you’re maybe thinking that the setup is at least going to be a big job — not at all. Our professional installers will get your house set up with a full wireless system in just a matter of hours. Then they’ll talk you through how the Smart Home App works, so that you’re at ease with your new, smarter system.

Right, your system is up and running – what about keeping it that way? If you’re worried that you get a Smart Home system set up and then it’s left to you to maintain it, don’t be. Our customer service team is on hand to talk you through any issues that might arise with your Smartzone products or app. You won’t just be left with some gadget in your lap for you to figure out: we’re just a call away and ready to send an engineer to your home in the event that you have a technical issue that needs sorting.

Who Can Install a House Alarm System?

There is no one-size-fits-all answer to this question, as the best person to install a home alarm system depends on a variety of factors. Some of the things you’ll want to consider include the type of system you’re looking to install, the size of your home, your budget, and your DIY skills.

If you’re looking for a simple, do-it-yourself home alarm system, then you might be able to install it yourself. However, your system will be far more reliable and secure if it’s installed and maintained by trained professionals.

How Often Should You Test Your Home Alarm System?

There is no definitive answer to this question as it depends on a number of factors, including the type of alarm system you have, the age of your system, the frequency of false alarms, and your personal preferences. However, most experts recommend that you test your system at least once a month to ensure that it is working properly.

Can house alarms reduce home insurance costs?

,

A home alarm system will generally reduce your insurance costs, but a few variables might determine the amount you save. With all insurance companies, you must follow their rules and requirements to save the most amount possible.

Not following their requirements can result in zero savings, even if your home is more secure. Examples of the types of stipulations can include the following:

  • Deadbolts
  • Smart locks
  • Burglar alarms
  • Smoke alarms
  • Motion sensors
  • CCTV
  • Internal alerts to emergency services and the Gardaí

Insurance companies favour smart home security systems because they integrate multiple intrusion systems to create a comprehensive approach to home security. That comprehensive approach includes combining physical alarms that make a lot of noise with internal alerts to the Gardaí and fire, cameras, and physical actions that prevent entry by intruders.

Stipulations for a policy are listed in the policy declarations and in the content of the policy itself. Making sure you read the entire agreement to document any discounts and inform your purchase decisions is critical to getting the equipment that will give you the largest discount possible.

Is it worth having a house alarm?

The worth of an alarm system goes beyond any discounts you get on your homeowner’s insurance policy. For example, even if what you have gets you a minimal discount, it keeps your home secure and your belongings safe, and it is worth the investment.

Whether it is a good investment for insurance discounts depends on the company you have the policy with and their internal requirements. Insurance companies exist to make money, and having to pay out claims is something they actively work to prevent.

Adding an obstacle or obstacles to intruders, an alert system for fires or gas or water leaks, and ways to document what is happening around your home helps them avoid paying out claims. Because of that, as long as you install a system that complies with their requirements, they will likely give you a break on your insurance rates.

How many different types of alarms are there?

There are many different types of alarms that provide warning systems for many different aspects of home security. Here are a few of the most common.

Burglar alarms

These are the standard type of home alarms most people recognize as the “traditional alarm system.” Burglar alarms usually have a very loud warning system designed to alert the homeowner and neighbours of an intrusion and scare off those who activate the alarm but have not gotten into the home yet.

They include door and broken window sensors, motion detectors, and invalid disarming code alarms. If connected to a Professional monitoring service such as Smartzone, they will have links to the Gardaí, Fire and Emergency Services.

With a monitored house alarm, you will receive a phone call to verify that you are experiencing a break-in. If you do not reply or do not give them a security code, they will treat any activation of the alarm system as a break-in. With the Gardaí and fire, if they cannot confirm that there is no emergency, they will dispatch personnel to check it out in person.

Smoke alarms

Smoke alarms are standard in just about every building. The only question is whether the alarm is a high-pitched warning that is impossible to ignore or whether it is the warning siren plus alerting the Gardaí and emergency services. As with burglar alarms, if you do not provide a security key directly into the system or through a separate call, the alarm will be treated as a fire emergency.

Heat sensors

Heat detectors and sensors are usually placed strategically around a home, and their purpose is to pick up on extreme temperature differences or increases in temperature. Internal and external alarms go off when a heat signature activates the sensor. Internal alarms can go to a third-party security management firm or the fire service, depending on your service.

Carbon monoxide alarms

Carbon monoxide alarms are usually an alarm that alerts the parties in the home that carbon monoxide is present. Some systems will link the alarm to a third-party management firm. Few get linked to a fire department. When an alarm goes off, the standard operating procedure is vacating the premises and contacting fire emergency personnel.

With a third party, they will usually try to contact you and fire personnel to investigate the report of carbon monoxide.

Leak detectors

Leak sensors cover both gas leaks and water leaks. Gas leaks can cause an explosion or fire. Water leaks can do thousands of euros worth of damage. When an alarm for gas goes off, an internal alarm usually alerts your gas provider and the fire service. You must vacate the premises as soon and as carefully as you can.

For water leaks, the alert is usually contained to the home unless you have a third-party service that will give you a call.

Are home alarms easy to install and maintain?

The difficulty of installing and maintaining an alarm system depends on the type of system you choose to install. Most systems that qualify for an insurance discount will require a professional installation by a PSA (Private Security Authority) registered installer. If you install the system yourself, you will usually need to have it inspected by a PSA professional to verify it works and complies with insurance company stipulations and requirements.

Monitored vs. unmonitored alarm systems

Monitored systems are managed by a third party and linked to the Gardaí, Fire and Emergency Services.

With unmonitored systems you monitor and must physically inspect it, calling the Gardaí or other emergency services if you deem it appropriate.

How To Secure Your Home Against Burglaries

In recent years, crime rates have fluctuated quite a bit. In the first quarter of 2022, Ireland had nearly 5,100 burglaries.

Keeping your home secure is always a top priority, and any falling crime rates shouldn’t mean dropping your guard. Taking a few steps for burglary prevention can ensure your house stays safe. Some burglary prevention stops robbers from seeing your house as a target, and others address the worst-case scenarios of securing against break-ins.

What Impact Do Burglaries Have on Homes in Ireland?

A burglary can be a dramatic event, with damages to the home from break-ins and reckless criminals searching for valuables. Missing family treasures, broken keepsakes, and even a potential for violence are some personal threats of burglary.

In Ireland, some counties experience burglary at much higher rates than others. In these cities, like Dublin, locals have to deal with the presence of gang violence. It’s an unpleasant current reality, but there are ways to ensure burglary prevention. Some methods can even help protect nearby neighbours, contributing to a safer and happier neighbourhood. By taking some simple precautions, you can help make your neighbourhood a safer place for everyone.

Who are the most common victims of burglary?

There is no definitive answer to this question as it can depend on a number of factors, including the location of the burglary, the time of day/night that it occurs, and the type of property that is targeted. However, some research has suggested that the most common victims of burglary are young adults, renters, and those who live in urban areas.

How Do Home Alarm Systems Work, and Are They Effective?

Home alarm systems are an efficient method to keep out robbers, and in recent years smart home security systems have made it even easier to prevent burglaries.

In a home security system, you install sensors throughout your house in doors, windows, or other entrances. These sensors send signals to the control hub, which is often connected to a phone or personal device.

When you’re away and set the alarm, any unexpected motions will instantly notify you. If you’re suspicious of the source, you can send emergency services within minutes.

Even when you’re home, it can be a helpful way to be instantly aware of any dangers. Plus, some systems can include cameras that give you a safe way to check outside noises.

Do Home CCTV Systems Deter Burglaries?

Burglary prevention can keep potential robbers away from your house entirely, and CCTV video is an excellent deterrent. When a camera is outside, criminals know to stay away.

CCTV camera systems can cover both indoor and outdoor areas. Many include microphones so you can speak to deter intruders or tell the pets commands while you’re away. Besides keeping your house monitored, cameras stop burglars they have a higher chance of identification. Many burglaries go unsolved, especially when no one’s home.

Modern cameras can handle day and night conditions in high-definition detail. These cameras can send you a live feed wherever you are through a safe wi-fi connection. These camera systems can be one of the most simple to install yet provide vital benefits to keep away crime.

What Is the Difference Between Monitored and Unmonitored Security Systems?

Monitored and unmonitored systems can make a significant difference in security because monitored systems keep an extra pair of eyes on your house. When a home security system has monitoring, the company has professionals who keep tabs on home alerts. If you were away when an alarm went off and didn’t respond in a set period, they would call you to sort it out.

If necessary, they’ll send emergency vehicles to your home and help the process. Unmonitored systems have no such support. While the home security alerts can be helpful, it’s hard to guarantee that you’ll be available 24/7 to receive them. Monitored systems help solve this issue by having professionals there to fill in for you.

This extra help can be a significant relief when you’re away on holidays and can focus on relaxing instead of watching your system. It’s a luxury of burglary prevention. You don’t have to worry about your home while you’re away on vacation, because you know that your security system is keeping an eye on things for you. That’s the peace of mind that comes with a good home security system.

How Do Door and Window Sensors Work?

Most home security systems rely on motion sensors in windows and doors. When someone triggers a sensor, you receive an instant alert about unexpected movement. Motion sensors work differently, as some detect vibrations or emit light waves that notice disruptions. Others rely on measuring body heat through infrared.

Today, burglary prevention motion sensors have long battery lives, adjustable sensitivities, and use computers to distinguish typical movements from suspicious activity.

What Other Steps Can You Take To Prevent Burglaries?

Burglary prevention doesn’t need to rely on having a home alarm system, there are plenty of tips everyone can follow to help keep robbers away. Even with a home security system these methods can provide extra peace of mind. For example, you can install motion-activated floodlights around your home. These will come on automatically if someone steps onto your property, deterring would-be criminals. You can also trim back any bushes or trees that provide hiding places for intruders.

Don’t Be a Target

When robbers are searching for a place to break into, there are a few signs they take as an invitation. For instance, vacant houses often have lights that are always on or other signs of neglect. Ensure that a neighbour or friend regularly checks in and prevents mail or other notices from piling up.

Secure Valuables and Private Information

Make sure any hidden extra keys are in a secure location that isn’t easy or typical to spot. Also, hide any other keys or valuables while you’re away. When you leave the house for a while, don’t post about the plans or your location on public social media. If you’re going to be gone for more than a day or two, it’s best to let your close friends and family know where you’re going to be and when you’ll be back.

Begin or Join Neighbourhood Watches

In Ireland, there are plenty of opportunities to work with the Gardaí to keep your entire neighbourhood safe. Community efforts for burglary prevention help notice suspicious activity and strengthen neighbour relationships. By working together, we can make our neighbourhood a safer place for everyone.

What is a Smartzone User Code?

, , ,

Smartzone User Code’s: Safer, Smarter, Simpler.

How many people should have a key to your house? There’s you and your partner. And your kids need their keys after school perhaps?

Then there’s your neighbor. He walks your dog when you’re away. Should your babysitter have a key? Maybe. If your plumber had a key, you could have saved a half-day of vacation last week, but you can’t just hand keys out and you know better than to keep one under a rock. Did the baby-sitter ever return that key? Your son lost his key on the bus, a nuisance, and a big security risk.

Keys are a headache. Smartzone smart locks and user codes are the cure.

Smartzone user codes are simple four or six-digit codes that allow users to disarm your Smartzone smart security and open your open your Alarm.com-powered smart lock. They make access easy, keep your home more secure, and protect your peace of mind by keeping you in the know:

How do user codes make life easier?

THEY ARE A SMARTER WAY TO GIVE ACCESS

It’s simple to set up a unique code for each member of your family. Here’s a step-by-step guide to setting up Smartzone user codes.

For non-family members, user codes are easy to customise for limited access. For your cleaner, you can set up a code that works only on weekdays between 12.00 and 2.00pm. A one-day user code will let a contractor in today, but not tomorrow.

ACCESS ALERTS GIVE YOUR PEACE OF MIND

Example of a Smartzone notification
Once everyone has their own code, Smartzone can let you know who’s coming and going. You can push notification or email when somebody arrives, or a daily video clip of your kids coming home from school.

IT’S SMARTER FOR SECURITY

User codes and smart locks eliminate many of the security risks and costs that come with spare keys. Unlike a key, a user code can’t be dropped, mislaid or left in the door. If your kids forget their codes, there’s always the doorbell camera and they can call you so that you can let them in using your smart lock.

And, should you ever suspect a code has been shared, stolen or misused, you can open your Smartzone App and delete it, fully restoring your front door’s security with no expensive locksmiths or alarm engineer visits necessary.

HOW DO I GET STARTED WITH USER CODES?

User codes and smart locks are part of the professionally-delivered, smarter home security experience that you get with Smartzone. Our Smartzone Pro Team can install a wide range of best-in-breed smart locks, fully integrated with your Smartzone smart security system and controlled with your Smartzone app.

How to Create Unique Smartzone User Codes

, ,

SETTING UP SMARTZONE USER CODES IS EASY

Clue: it’s not a key hidden under a rock. The answer is a unique user code. It’s a four-digit access code for your Smartzone Smart Security System. It’s easy to create (and delete), you can restrict it to certain days and times, and you can have Smartzone alert you whenever your visitor uses it.

Here’s how to set one up.

1: GO TO ‘ADD USER’

Log into your Smartzone dashboard at Alarm.com on your desktop or laptop and click the Users link under the Security tab. Note: The ability to set up and manage users is now available in the Smartzone app also.

Then, click ‘Add User’.

Smartzone User Code 1a
3. ENTER THE USER’S NAME & SPECIFY THEIR ACCESS LEVEL

In the ‘Add User’ screen, give your user a name, and specify their access level. You’ll want to click the ‘Panel Access’ icon to let them disarm your system. If you have smart locks, specify which lock(s) they can use. For the dog walker, we’re selecting the front door only.

Smartzone User Code 2
4. CREATE A CODE AND SPECIFY ACCESS TIMES

Enter a unique code for your user. This code enables them to disarm your security system and open your door’s smart lock. Because the code is unique (you can’t duplicate your user codes), it also enables Smartzone to identify who accesses your home, and send you an alert when they enter or leave.

Now, specify your user’s access time. You can choose ‘At All Times’, or you can specify certain time windows only. For our dog walker, we’re specifying weekday access between 11am and 2pm.

Smartzone User Code 3
Click ‘Save’ and your new user is created!

You can now create an optional alert that lets you know when they arrive and leave.

If you no longer need to give the user access, the code is easy to delete. Navigate to the Users screen again and find the user code. Then, click the ‘trash’ icon (circled below) and confirm the deletion.

To change a user’s access details without deleting them altogether, click the ‘edit’ icon, which will take you to an ‘Update User’ screen where you can change their permissions, times and four-digit code.

Now that you’ve created your first user code, you can create one anytime you need to let a trusted guest into your home.

How To Protect Your Smartzone Account From Intruders

,

Top Tips on Managing, Protecting & When To Share Your Account Password.

Smart home “hacks” are frightening. You may have seen the viral news stories. A family’s security camera was hijacked to play fake warnings about a nuclear attack. A stalker harassed his ex-partner by changing her lock codes and turning her lights on and off.

How do these attacks happen? Typically, the intruder doesn’t target the smart home technology company. He targets the homeowner’s account instead, taking advantage of a security lapse—a weak or compromised password, for example—to log in to their account or mobile app.

The good news is that you can protect your account from an intruder by taking some simple measures. Smartzone offers several smart safeguards for you to employ, and we are always on hand to offer help and expertise.

Here’s how to take action and keep your Smartzone account better protected.

UPDATE AND IMPROVE YOUR PASSWORD

A weak or re-used password is the digital equivalent of a door key tucked under the mat. It’s how most hacks and data breaches happen. Create a stronger password for your account by following these rules:

  • AVOID THE OBVIOUS: Dogs are for home security, not password security. Don’t use your pet’s name, or favorite team, or anything else that’s easy to guess. Pick a password or phrase that’s memorable—but only to you.
  • MAKE IT UNIQUE: Add capital letters, numbers and symbols to make your password harder to crack.
  • KEEP IT UNIQUE: Don’t use your Smartzone password anywhere else. Using the same password across multiple sites means that a single data breach—anywhere—will compromise all of your accounts. For safety, always keep a separate password for Smartzone powered Alarm.com.

Does your current password measure up? Log into Alarm.com, or go to the Login Information tab in your Smartzone/Alarm.com app, and change it now. We’ll wait!

NEVER SHARE YOUR LOGIN WITH OTHER USERS

Letting other people log into your Smartzone account with your credentials is a security risk. It makes it harder for you to track who’s logging in, and you could even lose control of your account settings.

When you give a new user access to your account, always give them their own login. It’s easy to do from your web dashboard (go to Users, then select Manage Logins). There’s no extra charge, and you can control exactly what each user can see and do within your account.

We provide a range of pre-set user permission levels, from “Read Only” to “Full Control”, to make this part easy—or you can customize each user’s permissions if you prefer.

DON’T GIVE ACCOUNT ACCESS WHEN A USER CODE WILL DO

If a person only needs physical access to your home, don’t give them an account login. Give them a User Code instead.

Let’s say you hire a dog-walker to visit your house on weekdays. A numerical User Code lets them unlock the door and disarm your alarm. You can restrict the code to work on weekdays only, and have it expire on a given date. You can even get an alert or video clip when they use it.

As any security expert will tell you: give people the access they need, and no more. In most cases, a User Code will take care of it.

SET UP REAL TIME ACTIVITY ALERTS FOR AWARENESS

Smartzone’s smartphone alerts can help you protect your account as well as your home.

To receive an alert when someone accesses your account, or tries to, set up a Successful Login or Unsuccessful Login notification. If you receive either alert unexpectedly, you’ll know to investigate and take action if necessary.

You’ll find these notifications in the System Event category of your notification options.

Please note: Unsuccessful Login alerts can be triggered when other Alarm.com users mistype a username that’s similar to your own. To reduce the likelihood of this happening, ensure that your username is distinctive and different. You’ll find it in the Login Information tab of your Smartzone/Alarm.com app.

LOST YOUR PHONE? SUSPECT A BREACH? DO THIS

If you think an intruder has access to your account, or you lose your phone with the Smartzone/Alarm.com app on it, here’s what to do.

  • Log into your Alarm.com Web Dashboard and go to Settings.
  • Go to the Devices tab, then select Lost Device.
  • Submit a “Disable Automatic Login” command to log every user out of your account and prevent any device from logging back in automatically.
  • Change your password immediately.

CREATE AN EMERGENCY ACTION PLAN FOR YOUR FAMILY

If a fire broke out in your home, would everyone know what to do? Create a simple plan for emergencies to sure that they will. A good emergency plan includes:

  • Where to meet in an emergency, and how to get there.
  • Roles and responsibilities. For example, who dials for help?
  • How to navigate specific hazards, such as smoke.
  • Emergency contacts: who else will you alert?

Create, then practice different versions of your plan for a fire, a break-in and an extreme weather event. It is recommended that you practice twice a year.

Trim these areas until you have a direct line of sight to the street. Ideally, anyone in your front yard should be visible to you, your neighbors, and passers-by.

CONNECT WITH YOUR NEIGHBOURS ON SECURITY

Home security extends beyond your home. Teaming up with neighbors is one of the top home security measures you can take, and it’s easy to connect with neighbours digitally when you can’t meet in person.

Your neighbors can keep you informed about suspicious activity in the neighborhood and watch your home when you’re away by setting up a What’s App Group.

  • A mobile app to control everything, see what’s going on, and stay connected to home.

GET YOUR LIGHTING SET UP AND IN SHAPE FOR THE SUMMER

You won’t always be at home—but you’ll always want potential intruders to think that you are. That’s why smart lights are an outdoor security essential. Ask Smartzone about motion-triggered and automated lights. They’re easy to add to your security system, and ensure that intruders won’t be able to hide in the dark.

For extra deterrence, ask us about Smartzone’s video analytics. This technology allows your security cameras to distinguish people from animals and vehicles, and trigger your outdoor lights accordingly. Find out more here.

EDUCATE YOUR KIDS ON SAFETY AT HOME

We teach our kids to stay safe in the outside world. You should also teach safety at home—especially to older kids who want to stay home alone when you’re out. Your kids should know:

  • Never to post on social media that they’re home alone
  • Never to answer the door to strangers
  • How to lock up and arm the security system
  • What to do if they smell smoke or discover an emergency

SET UP NEW ALERTS FOR HOME SAFETY

Smartzone’s smartphone alerts help you stay one step ahead of danger. To enhance your safety at home, set up the following:

  • Geo-Services reminders: When you don’t leave home as often, it’s easy to make home security mistakes like forgetting to lock the door when you do. Our Geo-Services reminders use your location to alert you if you leave home with your security system disarmed or your door unlocked, so that you can secure the house remotely.
  • Contact sensor alerts: If your kids are exploring the house more than usual, setting up alerts for doors and windows will let you know if they’re go places they aren’t supposed to, or leave entry points to your home unsecured.
  • Unexpected Activity: these alerts look out for your family by letting you know when something happens that doesn’t match your home’s everyday activity patterns.

INSPECT YOUR SECURITY & LIFE SAFETY DEVICES

Did you test your smoke detectors when the clocks changed this spring? If not, now is the time.

Giving your home security and safety devices a quick inspection every few months helps to ensure that they’ll always be ready when you need them. Test your smoke detectors and clean your security cameras, using your mobile app’s live feeds to make sure their angles are correct.

For additional peace of mind, set up a low battery alert for your Smartzone connect smoke detectors. Next time you need to change your batteries, you’ll know in advance.

GIVE YOUR SMARTZONE ACCOUNT A SECURITY AUDIT

When you use smart technology to keep your home secure, it’s extra-important to prevent unauthorized access to your account and mobile app.

When you’re done tuning up your physical security, take a few minutes to double-check your digital home security too. Set up two-factor authentication and make sure all users and login’s are up to date.

10 Great Reasons To Add Smart Plugs To Your Home.

, , , ,

SMARTZONE SMART PLUGS – SAFER, SMARTER, SIMPLER, SAVINGS

Working from home. Kid’s driving you mad, too much to get done, and not enough time to do them? Have you ever wished that your home could do them for you? That your house would just run itself? Or even that you could save energy without having to run around the house every night to switch off all the power points?

Well, with Smartzone you can. You Smartzone System can make your wishes come true! The Smartzone smart plugs are the first easy step into home automation, and they will have you wondering how you ever got by without them.

Before we get into the great things you can do with them, you might be wondering what a Smart Plug is, and what makes them ‘Smart’?

WHAT MAKES SMARTZONE SMART PLUGS “SMART”?

A smart plug is like a plug adapter – it fits between your power socket and the appliance you wish to plug in. At its most basic level, it simply turns things on and off. But, when connected to a smart home platform, it becomes a very capable device.

They are considered ‘smart’ because they let you control your appliances using your Smartzone App on your phone from anywhere. Smartzone will let you set schedules for your smart plugs so you can turn appliances on and off at set times and on specific days.

Each Smartzone Smart Plug is also an energy meter and can tell you how much energy each appliance connected through it is using. This is an incredibly useful feature for the energy-conscious consumer and is communicated to you via the Smartzone App to help you save on energy use.

So how do you control them? The Smartzone System in your home comes Smart Enabled. It can communicate with the Smart Plugs, manage schedules and automation, and keeps everything under control.

HERE ARE 10 COOL THINGS YOU CAN DO WITH A SMART PLUG:

1: TURN YOUR HOME INTO A HAUNTED HOUSE:

Keeping the Kid’s occupied when at home for long periods can be daunting. Have some fun with them and create a knee-trembling creepy house, well, picture this:

Your family walks in the front door and all the lights go out. Then eerie waltz music starts playing from somewhere deep in the house. Next, the lounge room lamp turns on, but only for a minute, before switching off again.

The music cuts and there’s silence. A small floor heater turns on and blows hot air at their feet, then the TV turns on with maximum volume… If you haven’t scared them at this point, then they have a very steely nerve!

2: TAKE SOME STRESS OUT OF BEDTIME – AUTOMATE YOUR LIGHTS & APPLIANCES:

One of the most useful features of the Smartzone System is lighting automation using rules and schedules. We all turn on lights around the house every evening and often these are table or desk top lamps. Using Smartzone Smart Plugs you can completely automate this. Save on energy and know that the lights are off when you get to bed.

Or when working from the home office you might forget to switch off the desk lights and must get out of a warm bed to go down and switch them off.

Setting your lights to come on and off to a daily schedule is a great way to use Smart Plugs. With Smartzone Easy Scheduler you can set the times you want lights to turn on and off each day. This can be done by time, or by sunrise and sunset with our system using web-based data to adjust the schedule for summer and winter.

Every evening set the lights come on one hour before sunset and off again at say midnight when you are gone to bed. Adjust for weekdays and weekends. Set up night lights for the Kid’s so that these can be set to go off once they have fallen asleep.

Just remember to switch your lighting to energy efficient LED bulbs to maximise savings.

3: IDENTIFY ENERGY HUNGRY APPLIANCES AND UPGRADE TO SAVE:

Have you ever wondered how much it really costs to run your home appliances? Or considered upgrading to more energy-efficient models, but feel unsure about which appliance will give you the biggest savings?

When you connect your appliance through a smart plug you can track how much electricity it consumes. If you don’t want to buy 10 smart plugs, you can always plug one an appliance at a time to a smart plug. You can then track how much each appliance consumes and you will know you exactly what’s using the most electricity.

With this knowledge, you will be able to decide, without a doubt, which appliance will shave the most of your energy bill if you replace it. You can also then select an appliance to keep attached to the smart plug, so you can switch it off when it’s not being used and cut down on its standby power consumption.

4: IDENTIFY AND ELIMINATE STANDBY ENERGY USE:

Standby energy usage is the power your electronic devices use when they are on standby. Standby or Phantom power can make up to 10% of your electricity bills. A Smart TV and Sky box left on standby each night can use as mush as €25 of energy per year.

Ok, so €25 on a single device seems like a small amount but this can scale quickly when you consider every appliance in the home that’s consuming energy when asleep. While a single device consumes very little in annual electricity use, when multiplied by several dozen products, you’re no longer talking about pocket change. This phantom energy use can account for as much as 10% of your annual electricity bill.  What’s more, standby power use is roughly responsible for 1% of global CO2 emissions!

Some of the biggest standby power energy suckers are:

  • Laptops and desktop computers
  • Heaters and ACs
  • Wi-Fi modems
  • Printers and scanners
  • TVs, Set-Top Boxes, DVD players and game consoles
  • Phone chargers
  • Microwaves, blenders and other kitchen appliances

When you connect your appliances to smart plugs, you can switch them off automatically using the Smartzone System and really save.

Set up energy saving rules:

  1. When I set the Alarm Away or I exit my geo-fence switch everything off. When I return home and enter my geo-fence or I dis-arm the system turn them all back on again.
  2. When I Arm Stay at night turn off all the lights and appliances downstairs and switch on the lights in the bedrooms.

Save energy and time automatically without having to think about it.

5: TRICK BURGLARS INTO THINKING SOMEONE’S HOME WHEN YOU ARE AWAY:

If you’re going out to work or just for a walk, or heading overseas for a holiday, you might want to create the illusion that you are home. You can do this by setting up a smart plug with a lamp near a window or in the front hall by the door.

All you have to do is connect your lamp to a smart plug and let Smartzone take care of the rest. Set schedules to turn lights on and off to give the impression you are home, and even use our cool holiday feature that will vary these on and off times daily by as much as 45 minutes so as not to look routine.

Set up a rule to turn on the lights if somebody rings your video doorbell or the motion sensor detects motion in the front garden. Having lights come on for 10 minutes like this is a great deterrent and will give a potential baddie pause for thought about coming into your home. It’s also very comforting to have lights on in the hall and at the front door before you get there.

Leave home relaxed knowing that Smartzone is helping your home look after itself.

6: AUTOMATE LIGHTING USING YOUR ALARM’S SENSORS:

Another really great feature of the Smartzone system is the ability to set simple rules that can turn on and off lights using door or window sensors. All the sensors on the Smartzone Security System are active all the time, not just when the system is armed away.

When you arrive home for example, set a rule that turns on the lights in the hall when you open your front door, or even better, set the lights to come on when you enter your geo-fence and have the lights on before you arrive home.

Letting the dog out the back for a quick run in the garden at night, then make the outside lights come on simply by opening the

7: OPTIMISE YOUR CHARGING STATIONS:

Your need to charge things quite often such as mobile phones, tablets, even the Kid’s games but not for 8 hours plus at a time. In fact, it’s bad for their batteries if they remain on charge for longer than necessary.

Batteries do not enjoy eternal life. Most smartphone manufacturers say their devices rate their batteries at 300-500 cycles. But, for many of us, it’s built into our routine to put our phone on the charger when we go to bed so that it’s fully charged and ready to go for the next day.

What we really need, is the ability to let our phone or tablet charge for 2 – 3 hours before the power is disconnected. A smart plug lets you do just this. By connecting your charger through a smart plug, you can run it on a schedule that automatically turns off the power at a set time. This could save you hundreds of dollars in new batteries (or thousands in new phones!) over time and eliminates the risk of fire due to faulty chargers.

8: LIMIT YOUR CHILDREN’S SCREEN TIME:

Tired of the weekday battle of getting your children to do their homework or to go outside for a while? That’s sure to have multiplied at this time when all the children are home because we are all at home right now.

Having trouble enforcing rules on how much TV can be watched, or how long the Xbox or play station can be played? Smart plugs can help you manage your children’s screen time and put into place a healthy home school and after-school routine.

Here’s a great example: Let your kid’s zone out and rest for half an hour when they first arrive home. Next, turn the power off to the TV set up for an hour or two, and make this ‘homework and outdoor playtime’.

Put the power back on for the hour before dinner so you have the headspace and quiet to get that sorted. Finally, make sure no one is getting up in the night to play games when they are meant to be sleeping – turn off the power when you go to bed.

The simple use of a smart plug on a schedule makes it easy to put a regular routine like this into practice!

9: START COOKING DINNER – WHILE YOU ARE AT WORK (IN THE OTHER ROOM)!

Do you have a slow cooker? Have you ever been frustrated by the odd length of time you might need to put it on for to cook your meal? 6 – 8 hours on low or 4 – 6 hours on high works in theory, but when you leave for work at 7am and get back at 6pm, a solid 11 hours will pass and your meal is going to be well over-done.

In the wonderful world of smart plugs, you can set a reminder in your phone to turn on your cooker at exactly the right time. This way, your meal will be perfectly stewed when you arrive home ravenous after a big day.

10: THE POSSIBILITIES ARE ENDLESS. TIME TO GET STARTED.

What to get more control? Then Smart Plugs are perfect and give you more control than ever.

Or, if you just want to save energy, save money, and not have to worry about remembering which switches you turned on that day, you can let the Smartzone take care of that, while you get on with more important things for You and Your Family right now.

How AI Is Shaping Business Management

, , ,

Artificial Intelligence Business Ireland

The effects of Artificial Intelligence implementation can already be clearly seen in everyday life. From asking Siri to set an alarm to telling Google Maps where you need to go. AI use has become so prominent that 46% of smartphone users are using intelligent assistant applications every day.

The use of Artificial Intelligence has extended into work life and business management. By adopting such technology employees and employees alike can save money, with business seeing an increase in revenue.

AI adoption means that employees can afford to spend less time on tasks that could easily be completed using computing technology. The same rule applies for employers. By taking smaller business tasks off their hands, employers now have more time to dedicate to making smarter and quicker business decisions.

What is Artificial Intelligence?

AI is the science of specially training computers to behave just like the human mind. AI has the ability to collect mounds of data and use this data to recognise and learn patterns. From these machines can develop human like skills such as planning, reasoning, perception and motion detecting abilities.

By learning how to think and react like a human AI is able to perform certain tasks that would normally be done by employees and employers.

How AI can benefit your business

Customer Interactions

Chatbots are one of the most common AI tools used within a business. The tool developed for customer services is typically used on websites and social media accounts.

Chatbots become an extended part of the customer service team by ‘talking’ with and responding to messages. The pop-up chat box usually has a preset number of questions and answers to pose to customers, saving your team a significant amount of time.

The automated tool shouldn’t be disregarded by any business. Chatbots are becoming so popular that their use is expected to grow by 136% by 2021. They’re even a preference by customers as 53% have stated that they would prefer to use an online chat before picking up a phone to call.

Simplify Decision Making

Artificial Intelligence Data Ireland

AI is efficient in taking large amounts of hard to understand data and sizing it down to an understandable level. Managers who use AI to do so see important insights without having to spend hours trudging through data.

Data is then presented into easy to understand graphs, charts and lists. Take Google Analytics as a prime example. Google Analytics illustrates clear data, such as how many users visited your site in the last day, week, month or even few years.

The ability to view essential information in a simplified language makes decision making by managers a lot easier, quicker and more informed.

Quicker Administration

Admin work is incredibly necessary in any business role. However, admin can take up a lot of time and detract from other essential work tasks or even upset the flow of work.

The role of AI in administration covers multiple departments such as management, sales and marketing. By letting AI take care of admin workers have more time for more creative or practical elements of the job.

Email Marketing Campaigns are a perfect example of AI use in Marketing. Applications such as Mailchimp allows you to schedule campaigns and send to certain target markets.

Mailchimp also has a data driven approach to campaigns by providing title suggestions that are more likely to get clicks and produces reports so you can view how many opened your email, where audience members are located and who in the audience interacts with your mail the most.

If you still haven’t considered email marketing for your small business, then you should. Email marketing is incredibly effectively and is found to give an ROI of 3800%

Intelligent applications are also incredibly useful in Sales as it can be used to separate high quality and low quality leads. By gathering information on leads, AI can score each one meaning the salesperson spends less time on leads that may go nowhere.

Greater Business Security

Artificial Intelligence doesn’t stop at the desk. Intelligent software can significantly impact on how your business is protected. Smartzone’s Video Analytics for CCTV uses AI to better secure your premises.

How Does Video Analytics Work?

Video Analytics Intelligence Ireland

The CCTV add-on can recognise the difference between a person, animal and vehicle. By utilizing AI, Video Analytics can distinguish between routine and abnormal events. In doing so, the system will alert you of any suspicious activity and danger in and around your business.

For instance, if you own a shop, Video Analytics won’t send you a notification every time a customer enters or leaves the establishment. However, you will be notified if anyone is caught hanging around the premises after trade hours.

As Video Analytics can tell the difference between a vehicle and a person, you can adjust the settings so you get an alert when a delivery driver pulls up – always keeping you in the know.

All security alerts are sent straight to your phone or tablet the moment activity is recognised. This means you are always aware of what is happening in your business at any time and from anywhere.
